Ellen DeGeneres Campaigns For Kevin Hart To Host The Oscars Gets Criticized By The LGBTQ Communi
If you’ve been paying attention to the drama surrounding who will host this year’s Oscars ceremony, you’d know that Kevin Hart was the first choice until ten-year-old homophobic tweets of his resurfaced. Now, Ellen DeGeneres is campaigning to get him back on the stage but not without pushback from the LGBTQ community.
In December, it was announced that Kevin Hart would be taking the helms of the Oscar hosting position making him the fourth Black comedian in history to hold that title.
The news wasn’t given 24 hours before it was met with controversy when internet trolls drudged up tweets from ten years ago where Kevin Hart, admittingly, negatively spoke about not wanting his son to be gay.
After letting the press circulation sit for a while, Hart brought up that he has indeed addressed and apologized for his past tweets and not that he’s older and wiser — he knows better. Instead of accepting the offer he chose to decline the opportunity of a lifetime.
In an episode of ‘The Ellen Show’ that aired January 4, Kevin directly explains what happened during the time of the scandal.

Ellen gave him a chance to speak his piece and then let the actor know that she has been in contact with The Academy and feels that he should take up the chance that is still on the table.
“As a gay person, I am sensitive to all of that. You’ve already expressed that it’s not being educated on the subject, not realizing how dangerous those words are, not realizing how many kids are killed for being gay or beaten up every day. You have grown, you have apologized, you are apologizing again right now. You’ve done it. Don’t let those people win — host the Oscars.”
Ellen personally knows Kevin well enough to vouch for him and is a pillar in the LGBTQ community; however, her opinion ruffled some feathers.
Someone tweeted: “I feel like if you’re not homophobic anymore, you shouldn’t mind apologizing for your past homophobia again and again and again. I don’t want to hear a hostile retelling of how we didn’t hear your meager apology the first time.”
“Ellen giving homophobes the ability to say ‘but Ellen said it’s okay’ is a massive f***** betrayal. I don’t care how many sitcoms you lost in the 90s” another chimed in.
What do you think of this? Should Ellen have said what she said?
