Birth and Early life :

Being the youngest daughter of Nikollë and Dranafile Bojaxhiu, she was fascinated by the stories of the lives of missionaries. For as young as age 12 she was convinced to lead a religious life. When in 1928, at the tender age of 18 she left home to join the sisters of Loreto at Loreto Abbey, never seeing her parents again.

By 1929, 1937 she had arrived in India, as novitiate in Darjeeling where she learned bengali. Later arriving at Entally, eastern Calcutta.

Early Days as As Nun and Teacher :

On her arrival in India, she began by working as a teacher. She taught history and geography. Although she enjoyed teaching, her compassionate self couldn’t help but look for those in poverty, hindu muslim violence and the misery of the Bengal famine brought In the year of 1943.

She found missionaries of charity in 1950 to serve people in her simple attire of two sarees with blue border, which later distinguished her identity as symbol of herself. The primary objective of this mission was to look after people, who nobody else was prepared to look after. Omitting the position of sister, she was now on the journey of becoming mother Teresa, now known to mankind.

She went door to door asking for help, shelter or food to help those in need. The journey was painful and difficult. As described in her diary during her first years of struggles “Today, I learned a good lesson. The poverty of the poor must be hard for them. While looking for a home I walked and walked… then the comfort of loreto came to tempt me… I did not let a single tear come.”

Although she had no funds, she depended on Divine Providence, and started an open-air school for slum children. Soon she was joined by voluntary helpers, and financial support was also forthcoming. This made it possible for her to extend the scope of her work. Each day, nuns would walk through the streets and bring people who were dying to Nirmal Hriday, located in a building donated by the city of Kolkata. The nuns would bathe and feed these people and then place them in a cot. They were given the opportunity to die with dignity, with the rituals of their faith.

Critique :

Mother Teresa never sought to convert those of another faith. Those in her hospices were given the religious rites appropriate to their faith. However, she had a very firm Catholic faith and took a strict line on abortion, the death penalty and divorce even if her position was unpopular. Some people complained that the houses for the sick and dying were not sanitary, that those treating the sick were not properly trained in medicine, that Mother Teresa was more interested in helping the dying go to God than in potentially helping cure them.

Death of a legend :

She had her first heart attack in Rome, while on a visit to Pope John Paul ll. After going through several continuous health issues and heart problems Henry Sebastian D’souza ordered a priest to perform an exorcism on her with her consent. She died on 5th of September 1997.
