The moonbeams are also supposed to sprinkle nectar on the day of Sharad Purnima. Rice-Kheer, a classic Indian sweet dish made of cow milk, rice, and sugar, is cooked and left in the moonlight for the full night on Sharad Purnima to take advantage of this holy event. Rice-Kheer is consumed and distributed as Prasad among family members in the morning, and is said to be invigorated and fortified by moonlight.

Sharad Purnima is also known as Raas Purnima ( in the Brij area). On the day of Sharad Purnima, Lord Krishna is reported to have performed Maha-Raas, the sacred love dance. The Gopis of Vrindavan stole away from their houses and families on the night of Sharad Purnima, hearing Krishna’s flute play a beautiful tune, and went to the forest to dance with Krishna all night. Lord Krishna produced a number of Krishnas to follow each of the Gopis on this day. Lord Krishna is said to have supernaturally extended the night to the length of Lord Brahma’s one night, which was the equivalent of billions of human years.

Sharad Purnima is known as Kojagara Purnima in many regions when Kojagara Vrat is performed for the entire day. Kaumudi Vrat is another name for Kojagara Vrat.

Significance of Sharad Purnima

Sharad Poonam is a spiritual celebration that honours the moon when it is at its fullest. On this day, the Moon appears in all of its 16 Kalas. According to Indian astrology, each Kala represents a human characteristic, and a combination of all 16 Kalas creates a flawless personality. Lord Krishna is claimed to have inherited all sixteen Kalas at birth.

The rays of the Moon of Sharad Poornima have remarkable healing and nourishing effects. On this day, it is also said that the moonlight drips elixir or Amrit. So, on this day, devotees should make Kheer and place the bowl of this delectable dish in direct moonlight to absorb all of the moon’s positive and heavenly beams. This Kheer is served as Prasad to everyone the next day.

On Sharad Purnima Festival, newlywed ladies are initiated into Purnimasi Vrat, which entails fasting on all full moon nights. Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth, is also honoured on this day. Even if there is no Lakshmi Yoga in one’s birth chart or horoscope, it is said that if one worships Goddess Lakshmi all night while fasting on Sharad Purnima, one will be blessed with immense wealth and fortune.

Lord Krishna is also involved with the festival of Sharad Purnima. It is also known as Raas Purnima, as it is said that Lord Krishna performed the heavenly dance known as Maha-Raas with his Gopis on the night of Sharad Poonam. In Brij and Vrindavan, Raas Purnima is observed on a huge scale.
