Venus Williams running favorite for US Davis Cup team Captain amidst Mardy Fishsrumoredexit
Mardy Fish’s controversial decision to leave America’s No.1 doubles player Rajeev Ram out of the US Davis Cup 2022 team backfired, eliciting a plethora of backlash online. For context, Italy defeated the USA in the Quarter-final round 2-1 and advanced into the semi-finals. Since then, rumors about Mardy Fish’s exit as captain of the US team are doing rounds in the media circles.
Documentary filmmaker Daniel Shapiro broke the news on social media that Mardy Fish could quit his job as team captain of the US Davis Cup team. However, at the time of writing, the authenticity of the news cannot be confirmed.
“Sources telling me Mardy Fish is out as captain of Davis Cup Team. I guess you can’t have Jack Sock pick your team and have the world 1 sitting watching at home,” he wrote.
Neither Mardy Fish nor US Tennis Association (USTA) has officially commented on the news yet. However, following the unfortunate news, many tennis fans are chiming in with a set of names of potential players who can replace Mardy Fish as the US Davis Cup team captain.
“I know he’s a busy guy, but I’d truly love to see James Blake give it a shot,” the social media user wrote.
Jon Wertheim gave many possible names for the job.
What if the @usta — in a total rebrand; totally out of hidebound character — went waaaay off the board here? John Lucas? Dirk Nowitzki? Rajeev as player/captain? Chanda Rubin? Let it rip…otherwise, yes, James or the Bryans will be unimpeachable choices,” he wrote.
Rajeev Ram is ranked World No.3 in doubles in the ATP rankings. He won 2 ATP 1000, US Open, and the 2022 ATP Finals tournament with Joe Salisbury this season. After winning the ATP Finals, Ram expressed his disappointment because of his exclusion from the US Davis Cup team.
However, eminent journalist Ben Rothenberg posted in favor of Venus Williams. If the job is open, Venus Williams seems like a very tough pick to beat,” the caption read.
Venus Williams has not given any inclinations that she may take up the job. Also, she is an active player.
Venus Williams is still playing with strength
Venus Williams played her last match in the US Open in 2022. She also witnessed a warm farewell given to her sister Serena Williams from the stands. At 42 years of age, the 7-time Grand Slam champion has won it all both as a singles and doubles player.
After the retirement of both her sister and Roger Federer, many speculated that now it was Venus Williams’ turn to hang up her boots. However, she keeps on posting photos of her practicing. The American is ranked No.1012 in the world and was given a wildcard to play in Wimbledon this year and at the US Open.
